Instagram vs Tiktok - and why you should care

Instagram vs Tiktok - and why you should care

“AS IF”… we all needed another social media platform to post too?!

While on Linkedin a few days ago, I saw a post by a colleague who happens to work at a large marketing firm discussing his recent “interest” in TikTok. He mentioned that while he does not share content on TikTok, he is studying it to see if this is a platform he should be suggesting to his clients.

At INGroup Creative, we are doing the same! <great marketing minds think alike>.

Here is an easy breakdown on the two platforms:

CONTENT -

  • TikTok is a video only user platform while Instagram allows you to choose a static photo or a video.

    • On TikTok, users are able to record up to 60-second videos, whereas Instagram Reels only allows for up to 30 seconds maximum

  • TikTok’s numerous editing tools and songs library allow for creators to create more narrative-driven stories within the app

    • When it comes to seeing brand content, many people are tired of the typical sponsored post and respond better to a more humorous, engaging, lighthearted tone

    • Instagram has a ton of features, just not as many that allow direct interaction with the viewers

ALGORITHMS -

  • TikTok’s standalone product has the unique ability to drive organic engagement and visibility that has never been seen before, particularly among users with smaller followings.

  • Reels has the advantage of being built on Instagram, meaning a stronger presence from brand pages and an already captive audience, which increases visibility.

  • TikTok is the best venue to drive high engagement on influencer content while Reels offers the same potential for brand accounts.

The bottom line?

According to Statista, as of January 2021, the largest percentage (33.1%) of Instagram users were between the ages of 25 and 34 years of age, with the second largest (22.8%) being between 18 and 24 years of age. Additionally, over half of the audience on Instagram is female.

With TikTok, the audience is also a majority female. 60% of users are between 16 and 24 years old and 26% are between 25 and 44 years old.

DO BOTH, OR FOCUS ON THE ONE THAT MOST ALIGNS WITH YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE.
